    A fruit tree name. Both flowers and leaves resemble plum. Fruit is sweet when yellow and ripe, not sour. The kernel is flat and pointed, especially fragrant and delicious, also used medicinally. Those from the north are excellent. Large kernels are called 巴旦杏, what Japanese call almond. Confucius sat on the Apricot Altar. From "Zhuangzi." Hence it became a term for teaching. Also, the Apricot Garden in Xian's Qujiang area is where newly passed jinshi scholars were honored at banquets in Tang dynasty, the so-called Flower-Exploring Banquet. The old custom of calling successful candidates 杏林 is based on this. | 銀杏, commonly called the ginkgo tree. Trunk is straight, five to six zhang tall. Leaves are fan-shaped. The nut is called 白果, edible. The wood is solid and can be made into implements.
