    Cannabis. A grain-type plant. Also called 火麻. Also called 黃麻. Its flowers have separate male and female plants. Harvesting and uses differ. Males are called 牡麻. Females are called 子麻. Seeds are planted after the Spring Equinox. Flowers bloom around the Summer Solstice. Color is white with a slight blue. Very fine and small. Male hemp has five stamens. Female hemp has one pistil. Male hemp is pulled and soaked after the flowers fall. The bark is stripped off. The fibers are soft and tough. Can be woven into summer cloth. Female hemp is cut in autumn. First the seeds are collected, then it is soaked. Can also be woven into hemp cloth. However, it is rough, hard, and not white. Only used for mourning clothes, and for rice bags and such. Its seeds are also edible. In ancient times, it was one of the nine grains. | 胡麻 (sesame). That is 脂麻. Also called 油麻 (oil hemp). Square stem. Leaves are round, pointed, and glossy. White flowers bloom in autumn. Nodes form seed pods. Long ones are about an inch. Four-edged, six-edged, or seven to eight edges vary. Seeds have black and white types. Both can be pressed for oil. It is said that Han's Zhang Qian obtained the seeds from the Western Regions. Hence called 胡麻.
