    To fall. As in 霜降 (frost falls). | To subdue. To submit. | Going down from above step by step. The Analects says: "Descending one step." All positions and ranks that move downward in sequence are called 降. As in 降官 (demotion), 降服 (reduced mourning). | To lower. As in 降心相從 (humble oneself to follow), 降格以求 (lower standards to seek) and the like. Note: In ancient texts, the character 降 had no Departing tone. Today by convention, 降伏 (subdue) is read Level tone, while 升降 (rise and fall), 下降 (descend) are all Departing tone.
