朝 (asa / chō) is morning — sun rising through grass with the moon 月 still hanging beside it: dawn drawn honestly. It is the morning of 朝日 (the morning sun), 朝食 (breakfast), 毎朝 (every morning) and 朝顔 (the morning glory, “morning face”). Its second life is grand: a 朝 is also a dynasty or court — 朝廷 — because rulers held audience at daybreak, and 朝鮮 (Korea) carries it as “the land of morning calm”.

旦 (tan / dan) is daybreak at its most minimal: the sun 日 on the horizon line 一. 元旦 is New Year’s morning — the year’s first 旦 — and the character otherwise keeps mostly to names and to 旦那 (danna, “master of the house”), a word that wandered in from Sanskrit.

The culture stacks its virtue on this hour: 早起きは三文の徳 — early rising earns three coins of merit — and radio calisthenics at 6:30 remain a national morning rite.

Before you use Morning kanji

朝 reads as freshness, discipline and beginnings — with a scholarly bonus (dynasty/court) that only deepens it. 旦 is the minimalist's sunrise: one sun, one horizon — striking, though some readers will think of 元旦 (New Year) or 旦那 (the husband). Both are safe; 朝 is the warmer, 旦 the starker.
