天 (ten / ama) is heaven — a figure standing with arms wide, and a stroke above: what is over humankind. It is the heaven of religion (天国, paradise; 天使, angel — “heaven’s messenger”), of mandate (天命, heaven’s decree), of weather (天気) and of myth: the ama- of 天照 Amaterasu and the celestial 天の川, the River of Heaven — the Milky Way.

Japanese Buddhism stacked heavens with it: a 天 is also a deva, a heavenly being — Benzaiten and Bishamonten of the Seven Lucky Gods carry it in their names. And everyday speech keeps it humble: 天井 is just the ceiling — the “well of heaven” over your room.

空 (sora) is the visible sky below all that; 昊 (kō) the vast bright vault, a rare and handsome name character; 乾 (ken) is heaven in the I Ching’s trigram language — the creative principle itself.

Before you use Heaven kanji

天 reads grandly and safely: heaven, the celestial, the mandate above. Its everyday jobs (weather, ceilings, tempura menus) soften it in native eyes — context is everything. For pure sky-blue transcendence 昊 is the rare-beauty option; 天国 spells out "paradise" if that is precisely the destination you mean.
