猪 (inoshishi / cho) is the wild boar — the beast radical 犭 beside 者. Japan’s mountains are full of the animal and the language knows it well: 猪突猛進 (“boar-rush headlong advance”) is the four-character idiom for charging at a goal without looking sideways — used half as praise, half as warning. A 猪首 is a thick “boar neck”; ぼたん鍋, “peony hotpot”, is the traditional euphemism for boar stew.

亥 (i / gai) is the boar of the zodiac — twelfth and last of the signs. People born in 亥年 are credited with the animal’s virtues: honesty, courage, and total commitment once launched. The Day of the Boar in November brings 亥の子餅, boar-piglet rice cakes eaten for health, and by old custom kotatsu heaters were first lit on that day — the boar, being fire-proof in Chinese lore, protects against blazes.

In the wild pantheon the boar was the mount of the war god’s shrine messengers — fearless, straight-line power.

Before you use Boar kanji

猪 reads as headlong courage — the 猪突猛進 spirit — admired for commitment, teased for tunnel vision. It has no vulgar senses. For a zodiac birth-year mark, use 亥, the calendar's own character; it reads cleanly as the sign and carries the boar's honest, brave reputation.
