    A river name. A great river of Hubei. Its upper reaches are the Mian River, originating in Ningqiang County, Shaanxi. Flows east into Hubei and enters the Yangtze at Hanyang. Its lower reaches are commonly called the Xiang River. | The Milky Way. As in 雲漢 (cloud river), 銀漢 (silver river). | Dynasty name. Han Gaozu Liu Bang destroyed Qin and took the realm, naming the dynasty Han. Also called Former Han or Western Han (206 BCE). Emperor Guangwu Liu Xiu restored it, called Later Han or Eastern Han in history. When the realm was divided into three, Emperor Zhaolie Liu Bei ascended the throne in Shu, called Shu Han in history. The three eras totaled twenty-six emperors over 464 years. | During the Five Dynasties, Liu Zhiyuan succeeded Jin as emperor, naming the dynasty Han (947 CE), with two rulers over four years. During Western Jin, Liu Yuan declared himself emperor in Shanxi, naming the dynasty Han. During the Five Dynasties, Liu Chong held Shanxi as Northern Han, and Liu Yin held Guangdong as Southern Han. | A name for China. During the Han dynasty, military power extended to foreign countries. Until Wei and Jin and after, foreigners still called China Han. Even Chinese called themselves Han, as in colloquially calling men 漢子 (fellow). Also, the indigenous people of China proper are called 漢人 (Han people), in contrast to Manchu, Mongol, Hui, Tibetan, Miao and other ethnic groups.
