炎 is the flame itself — the visible thing. Read honoo alone, it is the character in 火炎 and in 炎上, going up in flames, which is now also the standard word for an online pile-on. It is the natural single character for a blaze.
燃 is the burning rather than the fire. It carries the verb 燃える (to burn, to be alight) and appears in 燃料 (fuel) and 燃焼 (combustion). Written alone it reads as a stranded verb rather than a noun.
One thing to know about 炎: as a suffix it means inflammation in medical vocabulary — 肺炎 is pneumonia, 胃炎 is gastritis. On its own it still reads as flame, but the association is close by.
焰 is a variant form of the flame character and is uncommon in modern Japanese. 燎 means a bonfire and is rare enough that most readers will not know it on sight.
Before you use Blaze kanji
炎 is the character for a blaze and reads clearly as flame. Keep it single: attached to a body part it turns medical, so 胃炎 is gastritis rather than stomach fire. 燃 alone reads as a dangling verb, and 焰 and 燎 are obscure enough to look like mistakes.
