A grain-type plant. The glutinous type of millet. What northerners call 黃米子 (yellow rice) is this. Planted during the Great Heat period. Suitable for dry field cultivation. Leaves are thin, long, and pointed. Grains have red, white, yellow, and black types. The grains are uniform without size variation. Hence in ancient times, people used them as a standard for defining inches and measuring diameters. One hundred grains lengthwise equals ten inches of the construction ruler. One hundred grains widthwise equals eight inches and one fen of the construction ruler. Also, in ancient weight systems, one hundred grains made a zhu, twenty-four zhu made a liang. This equals half a liang today.
