A metal instrument that produces sound when shaken. Colloquially also called a rattle. There are two types: One is a round shell with an iron ball inside and a small opening. Horse bells often use this type. This is what was anciently called 和鈴. The other is shaped like a small bell with a tongue hanging inside. Shaking it makes them strike and produce sound. Used in meeting halls for commands. This is based on the ancient bronze wooden clapper design. Therefore bells on building eaves are called 鈴鐸. Sometimes also simply called 鈴.
