菩提 (bodhi). Sanskrit meaning enlightenment. Therefore the Buddha's title is 菩提薩埵. 薩埵 means sentient beings. Meaning one who can enlighten one's own nature and also universally save all beings. Abbreviated as 菩薩 (bodhisattva). Nowadays the 提菩子 (bodhi seed) plant has two varieties: herbaceous and woody. Their seeds can all be made into prayer beads. Hence the name.
