    A grain plant. Form described in "粟." When it begins to grow it is called sprout. | It is called grain. Its fruit is called 粟. Its rice is called 粢. Since ancient times a major food staple of the north. Hence called 嘉穀 (fine grain). Now compared to rice being 大米 (large rice). It is called 小米 (small rice). The Rites of Zhou's nine grains and six grains. All have 粱 but no 粟. We know anciently they were the same thing with different names. After the Han, those with large spikes, long awns, and coarse grains began to be called 粱. Those with small spikes, short awns, and fine grains were called 粟.
