A tree name. Similar to willow. Only willow branches hang down while poplar branches point up, this being the distinction. One variety called 水楊 is the same as 蒲柳 (pussy willow). Leaves and branches are short and stiff. Fruit also has white catkins like willow. What ancients called 楊 mostly referred to this. The colloquial combined term 楊柳 is incorrect. Also 白楊 (white poplar) has oval pointed leaves, solid and straight wood, usable for beams and ridgepoles. Matchsticks are all made from this.
