A tree name. There are red and white varieties. The red has tough wood grain, anciently used for bow handles. The white has edible fruit. From "Book of Odes": "Lush sweet pear tree," telling of Duke Shao hearing lawsuits beneath it, and later people preserving it as a memorial. Hence the benevolent legacy of local officials is called 甘棠 (sweet pear) or 召棠 (Duke Shao's pear), based on this. See "杜" for comparison. | 沙棠: A tree name. Its wood can be made into boats.
