    To assist. An ancient official title had 師保疑丞, called the Four Assistants. See (Book of Rites). In Qin and Han, the chief administrator was also called 丞相, all meaning assisting the emperor. In later dynasties, government offices might have left and right 丞 under the chief official. Also, prefectures have 府丞, counties have 縣丞, all taking the meaning of assistant.
