琉璃. A precious object anciently from the Western Regions. Transparent and lustrous. Has all five colors. Objects made from it were extremely precious, considered a type of crystal jade. During Northern Wei, people from the Greater Yuezhi came to China and first began mining and melting stone to make it. This is today's fired enamel. Later it was also used to glaze ceramics. Tiles on palaces are called 琉璃瓦, also made from this material. Old Beijing had a Liuli Factory, the workshop for making it.
